This historic parish centres around a Victorian Market Town, home to the Borough’s Theatre ‘The Place’, Hartshill Park, Oakengates Leisure Centre, and The Wakes Community Centre. Nestled in between the abundance of natural green spaces, woodland and parks are the distinct and vibrant communities that make up this area.

Oakengates High Street & Market

Oakengates historic market town has a variety of award-winning real ale pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops. Every Saturday, Oakengates Market takes place between the hours of 9am – 4pm in Theatre Square and along Limes Walk, Oakengates. There are a selection of stalls selling well-priced products including fruit and vegetables, breads and cakes, eggs and pickles, tools, and textiles.

Theatre Square

Set back in the heart of the town is the Borough’s cultural centre, home to the The Place Theatre which hosts amazing national shows, comedians, musicians and the acclaimed annual pantomime. Within the Theatre building is the library which is supported by the Town Council.

Opposite is home to the Town Council’s community centre The Wakes. Opened in 2018, this fantastic community asset hosts hundreds of free events for families and local residents and is a hireable space for the community. Every summer The Wakes fair is a free event for families to enjoy in the square.

Annual Events & Celebrations

Thousands of visitors come to the Town each year. During the summer, the Oakengates Carnival is held in the town with a procession leading to a fun fair, craft fair, stalls, rides and free activities for families at Hartshill Park. This annual event attracts over ten thousand people a year.

Hartshill Park alongside its beautiful walks, flowers and bandstand, plays host to many events and activities for families across the year. From an Easter hunt to Halloween competitions, this great Green Flag park is a great place to bring the family.

During Christmas, Oakengates puts on a light show across the Town and local neighbourhoods, with its famous Christmas lights. The Wakes also hosts free events and activities for local residents during the festive period.

Award-winning Parks & Woodlands

In 2020, Hartshill Park was awarded the coveted Green Flag status. We pride ourselves in keeping a clean and beautiful park for all residents to enjoy. With tennis courts, bowling green and bandstand, this fantastic community space is a great asset to our town. The listed Oakengates War Memorial also stands with pride at the entrance to the park and plays host to important civic events each year. Alongside this, an important memorial to the miners stands at the rear of the park, celebrating the town’s important industrial heritage.

Oakengates and the surrounding communities has a network of green spaces and woodland. The most important being The Cockshutt local nature reserve. The site comprises a large area of heathland scrub surrounded by woodland and amenity grassland which provides a natural environment for a variety of wildlife, including birds and bats. There are a good network of paths ideal for walkers, horse riders and school children.

Alongside the natural woodland, the Town Council has supported the development of green spaces amongst our neighbourhoods. Wombridge Green, Ketley Grange playing fields, Ketley Bank play area, Parrot’s Beak are some of the protected green spaces for residents to enjoy. Take a look at the interactive local map.

Oakengates Leisure Centre

Open daily, this fantastic site has both indoor and outdoor fitness and leisure facilities and daily classes. With affordable membership and access to sites across the Borough, this is a fantastic sporting and fitness venue for all ages.
