Oakengates celebrated a fantastic Christmas light switch-on organised by the Town Council. Hundreds of local people turned up to see the town light up, enjoy free rides, performances and activities.

Despite the stormy weather, the event was a great success seeing community groups, craft stalls and local businesses come together for a brilliant Christmas market in the town’s Theatre and community building The Wakes. There was even a special couple of guests Mr & Mrs Claus who helped the town’s Mayor Stephen Reynolds turn on the lights.

Mayor Cllr. Reynolds said: “I want to thank everyone who made the event such a great day for everyone who attended this includes our amazing team, volunteers, security, first-aiders, and performers. We really pulled together and kicked Christmas off with a bang!

“We were unable to host our Christmas light switch on last year due to the pandemic, so it’s been great to see that we made up for it this year with so many free activities like lantern making, face painting, and a visit from the Exotic Zoo.

“I want to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year, on behalf of Oakengates Town Council!”
